Memory Care Café is a concept whose time has come: social groups for care couples with forgetfulness (Alzheimer's/dementia) that are fun, natural, accepting, inclusive of both care partners and offered weekly throughout the year.
The need is compelling:
- 25,000 people in San Francisco are living with memory loss.
- Approximately 70% are being cared for at home.
- Isolation and lack of engagement are common problems.
- This population is less likely to use traditional support services.
Memory Care Café gatherings are different from traditional support groups in their emphasis on cultivating acceptance without focusing on the disease perspective, and providing social and emotional care for both partners. In addition, care partners enjoy engaging in leisure time together—a form of light respite—without the stress of separation that can happen with formal respite services.
In the past two years, our nomadic Memory Care Café has come together for adventures in over 120 Bay Area locations including monthly gatherings at the Gatehouse at Fort Mason for indoor fun with music, movement and creative projects. Our program is growing, but many more could benefit if membership was free.
Our next big step is to make joining Memory Care Café free for all!
We need your help! Your donation will:
Expand Our Reach: The thrust of this fall campaign is to raise enough funds to shift away from our current membership model, and make Memory Care Café free for everyone. Having a free program will expand the number of people we are able to serve!
Support Our Operations: Help keep our program going! We are the only Memory Café serving San Francisco and Marin Counties.
